MEL Renovation Geological Survey of Canada Calgary

On November 24, 2014, the Prime Minister announced $5.8B under the New Building Canada Fund for investment in public infrastructure, including $380M for major repairs and upgrades to federal laboratories and research facilities across Canada.

As part of this mandate, the Federal Infrastructure Initiative (NRCan-FII) Assistant Deputy Ministry Steering Committee approved $10.8M in upgrades to the Geological Survey on Canada in the University Research Park facility near the University of Calgary.

Our team was seconded to supported NRCan and PSPC through design, construction procurement, construction and closeout activities during the warranty period to bridge the gap between the scientists and the project.

Using a Construction Management delivery method, the facility received major mechanical and electrical upgrades. 13 laboratories and 36 offices have been relocated and refurbished for energy consumption and space, and the lifespan of the facility has been extended to continue to meet its research mandate.

The facility remained operational during construction so that scientists and researchers could continue their research. To remain operational, the entire PMO team worked closely to ensure that appropriate temporary facilities were put in place to meet the needs of NRCan, and ensure business could continue without disruption.
